Nike Cosmic Speed Series

Cosmic Speed 2

The second boot of the series still has some elements from Cosmic Speed 1. Prominent among these is the glossy iridescence that permeate across the surface of the upper. It doesn’t really change much of the colour, but at least the shades do vary depending on lighting conditions. Another detail retained is the subtle tonal band containing target patterns, X and Os and Mercurial references.

It all boils down to the colourway to identify the boot as the second Cosmic. Nike has made things unique by giving each Mercurial silo their own Chapter 2 colourway. For the Vapor, the specific shade of Bright Mango pretty much applies consistently to every space of the upper (very reminiscent of the Vapor 8). Against that background, the Swoosh and NIKE branding pop in yellow.

Cosmic Speed 2 then creates a two-tone green colourway for the Supperfly, both in relatively bright shades that are total opposite to that of the first Cosmic Speed. Following the demarcation set by the Gripknit/AtomKnit, the front part shows a turquoise hue, while the quarter expresses the Green Strike that has informed the looks of some of the iconic Mercurial boots. One can say that the Superfly Cosmic Speed 2’s paintjob has a lot of influence from the ’98 SE Vapor IX released in 2014. The main difference is that the present boot changes the Swoosh colour from orange to pink.

The accelerated growth of women’s football has not gone unnoticed by Nike. And in recognition of that part of the sport Nike preview the Mercurial Cosmic Speed. It does feel like the Chosen 2 Superfly 7 in that a black base is made more intricate and interesting. There’s a sense that black looms over the Cosmic Speed Mercurials, but overall the gloss and the iridescence dominate the colourway. As Nike themselves say:

This special design blends some of the Mercurial’s best moments in the women’s game over the years. And for the first time in the Merc’s history, we’ve applied a never-before-seen Chrome finish to the plate and upper. It shines a light on the on and off-pitch excellence of women athletes who have helped shape the boot’s high-speed history.

The gradient on the Gripknit has more of a green pop, while the AtomKnit carries out a bluish to purple melange. Zoom Air, or at least its soleplate window, radiates with orange to pink hues. A sketch of Nike speed fulfils the look of the heel, and its the same visuals that appear on the band across the forefoot.
